On August 11, according to The Wall Street Journal, E.J. Anton, chief economist at the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation, has become a leading candidate for the Director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). According to a senior government official, the Trump administration is interviewing candidates for the BLS director position, including at least one long-time critic of the agency. Earlier this month, after the release of a disappointing employment report, Trump dismissed the BLS director, and officials are currently weighing potential successors.

E.J. Antony, who accepted the interview, has long questioned the employment data statistical methods of the Heritage Foundation as its chief economist. A White House spokesperson stated, "President Trump has selected the best talent to lead the federal government and will announce the new BLS director's candidate after making a decision." Reports indicate that the White House's consideration of appointing a well-known critic suggests that Trump plans to make significant changes to the agency.
